Cuttlefish Casting a Ring with Molten Gold
January 31, 2009 on 9:48 pm | In Our Jewellery, Our Workshop | No CommentsA short video of Fabio preparing molten gold and cuttlefish casting a ring for a commission.
The use of a cuttlefish skeleton as a mould is an ancient technique and is only suitable for simple and small designs. Each cast object is unique as the mould may only be used the one time.
The projections attached to the cast gold ring are of gold that filled the upward vents Fabio made within the cuttlefish pieces to allow for the escape of gases from the mould.
I will post a photograph here of the ring when finished.

Fabio now needs to set the stone and polish the pendant.
Rose Quartz & Sterling Silver Pendant: setting the stone
January 21, 2009 on 5:01 pm | In Our Jewellery | No CommentsFabio has started preparing a new pendant in sterling silver with a glorious cut rose quartz gemstone. I asked him what design he has in mind, to which he replied he doesn’t know yet…
Nevertheless, he has made the setting: two bezel rings. The first that precisely fits the rose quartz stone. And the second that fits snugly inside the first to provide a delicate ridge upon which the gemstone will sit.
And fit perfectly, it does…
Watch this space for the design as it unfolds!

Aquamarine Earrings & Pendant: a Birthday Commission in White Gold
December 28, 2008 on 11:29 am | In Our Jewellery | No CommentsA very special client of ours commissioned us to make for her a pair of aquamarine earrings and matching pendant for her birthday. The cut aquamarine gemstones were her own and, given their fine quality, Fabio suggested making the earrings and pendant in 18K gold rather than sterling silver.
She wanted a simple, elegant design and her inspiration was “water droplets”. Together a few sketches were made and in light of both the concept of water and that she did not usually wear yellow gold, white gold was decided upon. Fabio also suggested the addition of diamonds within the design to enhance the brilliance of the gemstones.
The resultant aquamarine earrings and matching aquamarine pendant are shown below. She has named them “April Showers”. I think they are beautiful.
The chain is also in solid white gold.
